Authors, D.M. Hopkins and P.A. Smith of the USGS and J.V. Matthews Jr of the Geological Survey of Canada. Forest refugia in Beringia where some plant species may have survived in the Ice Age, have been postulated. Data based on radiocarbon dating and fossil wood from Alaska and northwest Canada are augmented by results of palynological studies to show the persistence of some and total extinction of other tree and large shrub species.
