Tales of the MacKenzie Highway: The route that finally evolved into the corridor that is now known as the Mackenzie Highway was blazed by the Dene Indian hunters, missionaries, free traders and miners as well as the Hudsons Bay and Northwest fur trading companies. Surveyors, as early as the 1820's were also making trails in their search for a shorter route from the west side of the Peace River to the N.W.T. In 1930, after the death of three women in childbirth, the settlers of the Keg River area led by Dr. Mary Percy-Jackson, petitioned the Dominion Govt. honoured their request and the line was built. In 1931 and 32 the line was built further North to include Fort Vermilion. This line provided a quick communication outlet as well as a rough trail to the Southern outside world.
