Canada's Changing North: Since the original publication of Canada's Changing North in 1971, great changes have occurred in the North. This revised and greatly expanded edition provides a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the culture and geography of the region, looking at how the North has become increasingly integrated into both Canada and the world. Among the many recent developments explored is the legal recognition of aboriginal rights by the Canadian government, which has led directly to significant increases in the North's political and economic power. Canada's Changing North also examines how economic development in the North, which has long focused on non-renewable natural resources, has today grown to an enormous scale. Development of arctic oil and gas, which hinges on world supplies and national and international politics, has meant major changes across the North. Some of the newly formed national parks in the Canadian North are already under threat from mineral development. As well, northern tourism has made it possible for a wide variety of affluent visitors to visit hitherto remote areas, affecting the ecology. The final section, on northern challenges, discusses such critical issues as the impact of climate change, the social needs of a rapidly increasing aboriginal population, environmental protection of unique regions, and defense of arctic sovereignty.
