This book presents a narrative of political development in the Canadian Yukon Territory during and after the Klondike gold rush. Although not cast in a theoretical mould, it offers a case study of political behavior in an environment of economic decline; thus, it concentrates more upon the responses of territorial inhabitants to socio-economic changes and external political forces than upon the place of the Yukon among the national political issues of the early twentieth century. However, it does attempt to shed some light on Canada's experiences as an imperial power, a role that the government of the country accepted in opining up the west and north – even before the attainment of full independence from Britain. It is hoped as well that the study will make some contribution to the continuing debate over what form Canadian territorial governments should take in the future.
