North West Mounted Police in the Klondike, The (Audio CD): The Klondike Gold Rush of 1898 resulted in a massive movement of people from around the world seeking their fortune in the gold fields of the Yukon. In the confined gold-bearing hills around Dawson City, countless communities sprang up overnight. Most of the newcomers were not Canadians and the federal government rightly assumed that Canada's sovereignty would soon be tested.

Earlier, in 1895, a small contingent of Mounties arrived to show the flag. By 1897, Herchmer at Dawson City had become the NWMP headquarters. The Force had grown from 19 members in late 1896 to 285 by November of 1898. When the Yukon Territory was created by an act of Parliament on June 13, 1898, 31 detachments were organized into “H” and “B” Divisions. While crime did exist, punishment was designed to fit a need and thieves were frequently sentenced to duty on the huge Mounted Police wood pile behind Fort Herchmer. Still, with dedicated men like Sam Steele, D'Arcy Strickland, Charles Constantine and others, the Klondike Gold Rush was a relatively peaceful event. Their exciting story is told in this fascinating audio account of “The North West Mounted Police in the Klondike.” Narrated by award-winning broadcaster Les McLaughlin Written by Mark McLaughlin Total running time: 50 minutes
