Indigenous Difference and the Constitution of Canada: In this book, I explore a number of constitutional commitments that affirm the central role that Aboriginal peoples, through their prior presence on the continent, their unique cultural identities, and their intersocietal engagements with non-Aboriginal people, have played in the constitutional relationship exists between Aboriginal people and the Canadian state – a relationship that does not exist between other Canadians in Canada. I hope to explain why this relationship exists, why it is unique, and what it entails in terms of the Canadian constitutional order. I also hope to explain why recognition – by citizens, governments, and the judiciary – of this relationship is demanded by elementary principles of justice.
