Visions of a Vanishing Race: The classic photographic record of Native American life by one of America's greatest photographers is preserved in all its breathtaking detail and beauty in this magnificently produced volume.

From 1904 to 1930, Edward Sheriff Curtis sought out the vanishing tribes of Native Americans with an unwavering passion and dedication. His life's work was to record the faces and lifestyles of the Indians before they vanished forever beneath the settling of the continent by the white man. Curtis photographed his subjects from the deserts of the Southwest to the ice floes of the Arctic, recording with his camera and pen the look and the culture of more than eighty tribes.

For this book Curtis' daughter, Florence, has selected over 175 of her father's greatest photographs. She has also collaborated closely with Victor Boesen to give readers a moving and detailed biography of Curtis' life and work. This edition also includes a memoir of Curtis by his son, Harold, giving a rare glimpse of the real man behind the legend: “I saw a side of my father far removed from the backwoods of Minnesota where he had grown up. As far as I knew, he had only completed sixth grade, yet on the lecture platform, the Chief handled himself like one born to it. He grew up working with his hands, and before he came west he bossed a gang of muleskinners laying the roadbed for the Great Northern railroad. In fact, he once told me that the reason he took up photography (building his first camera from instructions printed in the Seattle Post – Intellingencer) was that it was easier than cutting wood for a living.:

The combination of elements brought together here make for a book that is important, rare and beautiful. Since its first publication, other books on Curtis have emulated Visions of a Vanishing Race, but none have superseded it. It remains a magnificent record of the dawn of the art of photography and the twilight of a great and proud people.
